Impact of Soccer Mangers on National Teams

A Soccer Manager for a soccer team is very important as they are in charge of all activities the team does such as training, tactics, team selection, major decisions in games, and lastly squad development. The manager selection process for a team takes time as they need to have skills and qualities that have to be acquired over some time; Communication skills, teaching skills, sense of humor, planning skills, evaluation skills, practical skills and so on. The United States National soccer teams (Both men and women) have mostly had American Managers. The women in times of hiring European managers have seen more success. Is there a reason why? Does the manager’s nationality play a role?

Since 1916 the Men’s soccer teams have had thirty-seven managers of which sixteen of them have been European. On the other hand, the women’s soccer national soccer teams since 1985 have had a total of nine managers of which three of them have been European.  The women soccer teams being managed by European managers seeing more success compared to the men having European managers is a question I don’t have an answer to yet. European Managers worldwide are considered to be good and experience due to the exposure they have with European soccer hence the reason why they get hired by other countries on different continents to help their various national soccer teams succeed.

The big question is that should all countries hire their nationality to manage their national soccer teams? I believe the best-qualified candidate regardless of their nationality should be hired although others may think otherwise and argue that well-qualified candidates can be found in their respective countries’ and we see many of them go overseas to acquire that priceless experience.
