Women’s Club Teams Popularity

There is no doubt of the dominance of US Women’s Soccer in the world. Winning four World Cups as a nation is something impressive that not too many countries have been able to do. Nonetheless, even with all the recognition Women’s Soccer has gained, we still see some of our stars play abroad (Europe). Why is this the case? Is it due to pay, popularity, facilities or recognition? The truth is that the popularity of the National Women’s Soccer League is significantly low compared to that of the Men’s Major League soccer. Since its birth 6 years ago, they have only been able to build 9 teams thus far, which is very disappointing considering the size and dominance of the United States.

Similarly, in Europe, the various countries have comparable amounts of Women’s soccer teams. The main difference seen is that in addition to each country’s tournament, they also have the opportunity to compete against each other in a bigger tournament (UEFA Champions League). Therefore, the UEFA Champion’s League is considered the highest prize and greatest honor due to it being the best from each nation competing. This is not the case in the US where our 9 teams can only compete against each other.

With all this a question is raised, what steps should be taken by the United States Soccer Federation to help with this situation? Is there help they could give organizations to help build more teams, facilities, and marketing nationwide at a wider scale? The truth of the matter is that the lesser number of teams available in women’s soccer does not contribute to getting public support and investment.  Men’s US soccer has 24 teams, this allows the public to be able to identify and support at least one team based on location or other factors. There is no reason why each State cannot invest in one team to help upraise women’s soccer in the United States.
